Cannes Lions Opens Nominations for Awards

Cannes Lions has opened its nominations for awards, with a renewed focus on sustainability, impact, effectiveness, interactivity, and diversity. The special awards updates include the addition of the People Leaderboard and an expanded regional network for this year.

Showcasing Impact

This year, participants in every category, except Digital Craft, Film Craft, and Industry Craft, will be required to provide information that demonstrates the impact of their creative work, showcasing a wide range of measures that highlight creative effectiveness.

Advocating for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

For the year 2023, participants will be encouraged to provide information about the composition of their teams behind the camera and any relevant information on brand or agency development and diversity agendas. While this information does not form part of the written submission and thus does not contribute to the judging, it aims to measure progress, and the results will be shared (anonymously) with the industry in an annual report.

This move builds upon the target-setting and harmful stereotype frameworks introduced in 2017 and contributes to ongoing partnerships by continuing to work closely with the Geena Davis Institute for Gender in Media and the Unstereotype Alliance.

Integrating Sustainability throughout the Lions

Cannes Lions is a proud member of Ad Net Zero, and as part of this, they aim to support the industry's campaign to reduce the carbon impact in the development, production, and distribution of creative work to net-zero by 2030.

Starting this year, all participants will be encouraged to provide information that identifies their carbon emissions as part of the production process, using the five-point AdNet Zero Action Plan as a guide. This information is not mandatory and will not be used in the judging process. It will be used by LIONS to create a repository of current practices.

Simon Cook, CEO of LIONS, said, "By posing these questions, we hope to uncover the amplified work of creatives and brands around the world and shine a light on it - the work that makes a real difference in this moment. This has helped us understand the current practices happening locally - within a specific work - so we can create a collective understanding."

Black Creative Rankings Categories

Two new categories have been added to the Global Creative Report for 2023, both based on points earned through Black Pencils. The Creative Leaderboard categories will celebrate those who are at the top of their game by recognizing their role in providing creative leadership that pushes their teams to expand their creative boundaries, both for their own work and for their clients. The CMO category recognizes collective management organizations that integrate courage and creative commitment in work that propels their brands forward and improves their bottom line.

Regional Network for the Year

The Best Regional Network award has been expanded from four to seven regions. The Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) award will now be presented in three regions: Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East and North Africa. APAC will be awarded in both Asia and the Pacific. North America and Latin America will remain as they have been in previous years.

The Cannes Lions Festival is open for award submissions for all categories, including the new Entertainment Lions for Gaming.
