Film in Competition for the Palme d’Or: THE ZONE OF INTEREST

THE ZONE OF INTEREST

This film is presented in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival 2023.

"The Zone of Interest" delves into the disturbing world of Auschwitz, where Commander Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig strive to build a dream life for their family in a house with a garden next to the camp.

Jonathan Glazer, aged 58, known for his four feature films, including the critically acclaimed "Under the Skin" in 2013, where Scarlett Johansson portrayed a captivating extraterrestrial luring sensitive men to disappear forever into the night, has made a highly anticipated return. His entry into the Cannes competition brings excellent news, both for a competition that was somewhat struggling and for the career of this uniquely talented filmmaker. Once again, Glazer delivers a work of immense power, intellectually and aesthetically, with his latest film.

The narrative is deceptively simple, offering a glimpse into the daily life of the Höss family, consisting of Rudolf (Christian Friedel), the father, Hedwig (Sandra Hüller), the mother, their four children, the mother of Mrs. Höss, a Germanic matron, and a servant whose life hangs by a thread. It's essential to note that Rudolf, a skilled technician in mass murder, is the historical commander of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp. His house with a garden is adjacent to the camp, creating a haunting juxtaposition.

Glazer's film, with its intellectual depth and visual brilliance, promises to make a significant impact at Cannes, offering a unique perspective on the daily life of a family intertwined with one of history's darkest chapters.
