Maryam Al Muhairi: COP28 Marks a Turning Point to Drive Climate Action
Dubaï, September 30th - During the closing day of the "Climate Future Week" activities at the Museum of the Future, Her Excellency Maryam Al Muhairi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasized the significance of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28). It will witness the first global assessment of progress in achieving the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and will also contribute to climate action efforts, including the development of necessary measures to close ongoing gaps.
In a recorded video as part of the Climate Future Week events, Her Excellency Maryam Al Muhairi highlighted the United Arab Emirates' commitment to climate action, noting that COP28 must be a turning point that advances the climate action process over the next decade.
Al Muhairi noted that the United Arab Emirates has always placed emission reduction at the top of its priorities, along with the preservation of natural resources, underlining the country's commitment to sustainability. She also mentioned that the United Arab Emirates was the first in the region to announce climate change neutrality goals by 2050.
Her Excellency Al Muhairi stated that the United Arab Emirates aims to reduce emissions by 40% by 2030, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between governments, industries, and societal stakeholders, embodying the country's approach to climate action.
Her Excellency Al Muhairi concluded her speech by highlighting the role and importance of COP28 and the United Arab Emirates' determination to make their upcoming session the most comprehensive Conference of the Parties, emphasizing the conference's action plan consisting of four pillars, which include accelerating the achievement of an orderly, just, and responsible transition in the energy sector and developing climate financing mechanisms. The focus is on preserving lives, livelihoods, and improving means of subsistence, ensuring that the conference is comprehensive and solution-oriented.
This event coincides with the Year of Sustainability and the preparations of the United Arab Emirates to host the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai at the end of next November.
Her Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Designated President of the Conference of the Parties (COP28), and Her Excellency Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, UN Climate Leader for the Conference of the Parties (COP28) and President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, also spoke at a special dialogue session to highlight the latest preparations for hosting the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change at the end of next November in the city of Dubai. The session was moderated by Dubai Abulhoul, CEO of the Fikr Foundation, and in the presence of Her Excellency Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, Director General of the Prime Minister's Office at the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, and several dignitaries.
The "Climate Future Week" conference, organized by the Museum of the Future, welcomed a number of ministers and government officials who reviewed the most important future opportunities, experiences, initiatives, and solutions in the environmental and sustainability sector and in response to climate change during the period of the large sessions held over three days (September 26, 27, and 30), concluding today, Saturday.
The dialogue was followed by the "Climate Startup Council" event, which discussed the experiences of entrepreneurs in various sectors, including sustainable water production, smart agriculture, innovation in waste management, carbon footprint measurement, and other important environmental and climate topics.
The "Climate Future Week" event, held in cooperation with the Fikr Foundation and with significant participation from experts and individuals interested in the fields of the environment, sustainability, and climate change, is part of the United Arab Emirates' commitment to strengthening national initiatives in the fields of climate, environmental conservation, and natural resource management, and enhancing the country's position as a hub for global dialogues that affect the future of the planet.
