Dee Templeton, Non-Voting Observer at OpenAI Board: In November of last year, upon returning to the helm of OpenAI, Sam Altman announced that Microsoft would have a presence on the new board as a non-voting observer. This role has been assigned to Dee Templeton, boasting a 25-year tenure with the company.

According to OpenAI, its board plays a crucial role in upholding its mission, both in its non-profit and for-profit arms, ensuring that AGI is developed securely and for the benefit of humanity.

Back in November, the board caused widespread confusion by deciding to terminate Sam Altman, leading to the resignations of Greg Brockman, both subsequently recruited by Microsoft, and the potential departure of 700 startup employees to join them.

After a tumultuous few days, Sam Altman was reinstated, and the board underwent a reshuffling. Adam D’Angelo, CEO of Quora, retained his position as an independent director. Bret Taylor, former co-CEO of Salesforce, joined as the chairman, along with Larry Summers, former U.S. Treasury Secretary.

This observer position strengthens Microsoft's influence, OpenAI's primary investor, which expressed support for the company and its CEO during that eventful weekend. OpenAI emphasizes on its website that, despite the partnership with the multinational, it remains a fully independent company, and this position doesn't grant any control. Thus, Dee Templeton will have no voting rights in decisions involving the election or selection of directors, but she will have access to confidential information.

Choice of Dee Templeton Dee Templeton began her career at Microsoft 25 years ago and marked a historic milestone as the first female technical employee at Microsoft New Zealand. Over the years, she has held key roles in various engineering and product divisions at Microsoft, contributing significantly to various technologies.

Currently serving as an advisor to Kevin Scott and Executive Vice President of AI at Microsoft, she oversees the operations of around 1,500 scientists and engineers within Microsoft's Technology and Research group. On LinkedIn, she also states that she leads "a talented team that develops and maintains some of Microsoft's most important technical partnerships, including the multidisciplinary team responsible for advancing our collaboration with OpenAI."

While her appointment to this position can be attributed to her extensive experience, proven leadership, and significant contributions to Microsoft over the years, her central role in the partnership with OpenAI has also played a crucial part.

OpenAI is reportedly looking to bring in other independent directors to its board, with names like Alexandr Wang, CEO and co-founder of Scale AI, and Nat Friedman, former CEO of GitHub and independent investor, being mentioned by various media outlets.
