Kering and Festival de Cannes Honor Malaysian Director Amanda Nell Eu with 2024 Women In Motion Emerging Talent Award
Kering and Festival de Cannes Honor Malaysian Director Amanda Nell Eu with 2024 Women In Motion Emerging Talent Award

Kering, in partnership with the Festival de Cannes, is delighted to announce that the esteemed 2024 Women In Motion Emerging Talent Award will be bestowed upon Malaysian filmmaker Amanda Nell Eu. Selected by Swiss director and previous Emerging Talent awardee Carmen Jaquier, Amanda Nell Eu stands as the latest recipient of this prestigious accolade, which includes a generous grant of €50,000 to support her next cinematic endeavor.

The award ceremony will be held during the official Women In Motion dinner in Cannes, where Dame Donna Langley, Chairman of the NBCUniversal Studio Group and Chief Content Officer, will be honored with the Women In Motion Award. The distinguished awards will be presented by François-Henri Pinault, Chairman and CEO of Kering, Iris Knobloch, President of the Festival de Cannes, and Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate of the Festival de Cannes.

Expressing her gratitude, Amanda Nell Eu, the director behind "Tiger Stripes," remarked, "I am incredibly honored to receive this award, and I want to give an extra thank you to the super bold director Carmen Jaquier. Thank you also to Women In Motion; I am already so grateful that I get to have my voice and use it and express it in a way that is free to me, so to receive this recognition is really special. Thank you to the big Tiger family – everyone involved in putting together Tiger Stripes – I think this film is a representation of the freedom that I am talking about and our potential to be beautiful bad-ass creatures in this world, if we can love, accept and listen to each other more.”

Carmen Jaquier elucidated her selection process, stating, “Upon discovering the wild energy emanating from 'Tiger Stripes,' I felt joy and remembered certain strange and violent tales from my childhood. Thanks to the rebellious power of its protagonist and its staging tinged with tragicomic elements, Amanda Nell Eu disrupts the ‘coming of age’ genre and delivers a jubilant, unique film. She reminds me that cinema is a place of invention, of insolence, and it is a great honor to pass this award on to her.”

In tribute to Carmen Jaquier, Kering has designed the official Women In Motion poster for this year's festival.

Since its inception in May 2015, Women In Motion, a joint initiative by Kering and the Festival de Cannes, has celebrated women's contributions to the film industry. This year marks the recognition of the tenth Emerging Talent Award recipient, following in the footsteps of talented filmmakers such as Leyla Bouzid (Tunisia), Gaya Jiji (Syria), and Ninja Thyberg (Sweden), among others.

Moreover, the Women In Motion Award has honored prominent figures including Jane Fonda, Susan Sarandon, and Geena Davis. This year, Dame Donna Langley will be recognized for her remarkable achievements in the film industry.

Gender equality lies at the core of Kering's commitments, and Women In Motion strives to spotlight women's roles in the film industry, both on and off the screen, as well as their broader contributions to culture and the arts.

With each passing year, Women In Motion continues to champion diversity and innovation, shaping the future of cinema and empowering women across the globe.
