France Commits to BBNJ Agreement for Marine Biodiversity Conservation

France Commits to BBNJ Agreement for Marine Biodiversity Conservation

In a significant move for the preservation of marine biodiversity, Mrs. Catherine Colonna, representing France, has officially signed the United Nations BBNJ (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction) agreement. This groundbreaking treaty is aimed at safeguarding marine biodiversity in regions located beyond national boundaries and ensuring their sustainable utilization, all under the auspices of the United Nations.

France's commitment to this agreement comes with a call for swift action. The nation is urging the agreement to come into force no later than June 2025. This coincides with the United Nations Ocean Conference scheduled for that year, to be held in the picturesque city of Nice. This event, known as UNOC25, holds the crucial objective of protecting a minimum of 30 percent of the world's oceans by the year 2030.

The signing of the BBNJ agreement by France aligns with global efforts to address the pressing environmental challenges facing our oceans. By committing to this agreement, France underscores its dedication to marine conservation and its determination to achieve a more sustainable and equitable use of marine resources.

The UN BBNJ agreement represents a significant step towards international cooperation for the protection of our oceans, and France's commitment to its rapid implementation sets a commendable example for other nations to follow. As the world strives to address the critical issues of marine biodiversity loss and the degradation of our oceans, such collective actions are vital to ensuring the future health and well-being of our planet's oceans.
