The Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski has already been in competition six times at Cannes and Jury Prize in 1978 with Le Cri du sorcier. He puts on the rails of the race for the Palme d'Or, at 84, E.O. (Hi-Han). The film, inspired by Robert Bresson's Au chance Balthazar (1966), tells the story of an uprooted donkey. EO is a donkey doing a circus act in Poland with his beloved mistress. Animal rights demonstrators released him following a municipal decree and the authorities made him available to individuals on request. He escapes and crosses the country to Italy to find his protector. His journey puts him in contact with benevolent or hostile people: the world seen through the melancholic eyes of a sensitive and misunderstood animal.
