Saudi Arabia in Talks for $200m African Super League Sponsorship
Saudi Arabia is reportedly in discussions for a sponsorship deal worth $200 million to support a new football competition called the African Super League. According to a report by UK news outlet the Guardian, this initiative is part of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) plans to enhance interest and generate revenue for football in the region.
The proposed African Super League has been under consideration for the past five years, and if realized, it could prove highly profitable for clubs and contribute to the development of football on the continent. FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino have expressed their support for the league, with Infantino stating that it has the potential to generate $100 million in revenue, placing it among the top ten leagues worldwide. Furthermore, Infantino aims to raise $1 billion to ensure that each African country has a FIFA-compliant football stadium.
According to the Guardian report, the African Super League could launch as early as the 2024-25 season, with Saudi Arabia serving as the sponsor for an initial eight-team tournament. Last week, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and CAF signed a five-year agreement to foster growth opportunities for football in both Africa and Saudi Arabia. CAF president Patrice Motsepe expressed excitement about the partnership and the potential for mutually beneficial collaborations between the two entities.
The strengthening ties between Saudi football authorities and the governing bodies in Africa could potentially bolster Saudi Arabia long-standing aspiration to host the FIFA World Cup. In a statement last year, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, Saudi Arabia Sports Minister, confirmed the nation interest in hosting a future World Cup, stating that "any country in the world would love to host the World Cup." While the 2026 World Cup has already been awarded to North America, the Kingdom aims to secure the opportunity to host the tournament in 2030. However, no official host nation has been named yet.
In summary, Saudi Arabia involvement in discussions for a $200 million sponsorship deal for the African Super League demonstrates its commitment to football development in the region. If successful, this initiative could contribute to the country aspirations to host the FIFA World Cup in the future.
