  • Maryam Al Muhairi: The National Carbon Registry is a platform for tracking greenhouse gas emissions, taking necessary measures to reduce them, and accelerating funding solutions.
  • 12 new companies have pledged to the Climate Responsible Companies Pledge in the United Arab Emirates, bringing the total to 117 companies.

Dubai, September 28 / WAM / Her Excellency Maryam bint Mohammed Al Muhairi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, called on local businesses to incorporate sustainability into all their operations as a means to launch global climate solutions and support the country's goals of achieving net-zero emissions and climate neutrality by 2050.

This occurred during Her Excellency's participation in the launch of the "National Climate Ambition Dialogue," the 12th edition, organized by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment in the presence of partners to enhance the climate sector's ambition and foster global engagement in the UAE, as part of the Year of Sustainability, ahead of the UAE hosting COP28 meetings at the end of the year in November.

The 12th National Climate Ambition Dialogue, held at the headquarters of the Institute for Sustainable Education and Research (SEE) in the sustainable city of Dubai, with the theme "Innovative Finance through the National Carbon Registry," saw the presence of Her Excellency Olaf Miklabst, the Kingdom of Norway's Ambassador to the country, and approximately 260 representatives from government agencies and the private sector.

In her speech, Her Excellency Maryam Al Muhairi stated, "As the United Arab Emirates prepares to host the Conference of the Parties COP28 with the aim of presenting the most comprehensive summit, it is crucial to involve all partners in accelerating climate action within the United Arab Emirates." She added, "We believe that by strengthening the interdependence between climate change issues and societies worldwide, we can achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate."

Her Excellency continued, "If we can promote sustainable solutions, we will open up broader horizons for more solutions. I believe that the innovative and ambitious business community here today and across the United Arab Emirates possesses many of these innovative solutions."

Her Excellency called on all companies to join the Climate Responsible Companies Pledge in the UAE, which is connected to the "National Climate Ambition Dialogue" initiative. This initiative is considered a vital part of the ministry's efforts to expand the scope of climate action in the country to achieve higher goals in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In response to Her Excellency Maryam Al Muhairi's call, 12 new companies have announced their commitment to the Climate Responsible Companies Pledge in the country, bringing the total number of committed companies to 117. The new companies include Union Water and Electricity, Dubai Islamic Bank, Innovation Industrial Group, Ideanco, Investcorp, Al Masaood, Mubadala, Masdar City, ThreeEightSix, Dar Group, CEMENT LION, and the Institute for Sustainable Education and Research (SEE).

In this context, Her Excellency Al Muhairi stated, "The companies that have committed themselves are dedicated to intensifying collective efforts to combat climate change, measuring and transparently reporting greenhouse gas emissions, developing solutions to reduce emissions, and sharing their plans with the government to achieve our net-zero emission and climate neutrality goals."

The National Carbon Registry as a platform for tracking greenhouse gas emissions.

Her Excellency emphasized that this is one of the best solutions for decarbonization, stating, "It is a platform that allows organizations to track, manage, and exchange greenhouse gas emissions. These registries are essential as they enable businesses and governments to measure, report, and verify emissions reductions to meet the ambitious commitments we have made as part of the newly announced third National Determined Contributions of the United Arab Emirates."

Her Excellency also called for expediting funding for projects that will contribute to achieving negative emissions and offsetting remaining emissions.

In this context, she said, "Climate finance is a critical factor in enabling climate action, which is one of the United Arab Emirates' key goals at the COP28. The climate crisis is already affecting our lives and our way of working, but climate change and the transition to a climate-neutral future can create new industries and greater business growth opportunities." She emphasized the role of the National Carbon Registry as a platform for tracking greenhouse gas emissions and taking the necessary steps to reduce them while accelerating funding solutions.

Following carbon credits.

Discussions at the 12th edition of the National Climate Ambition Dialogue focused on exploring the implementation process of the National Carbon Registry and provided insights into its role in recording and distributing the country's carbon credits.

Experts and participants in the event highlighted the registry's goal of serving as a platform for listing, transferring, and tracking carbon credits generated by projects and companies. They also discussed opportunities associated with using the carbon registry to achieve the country's decarbonization objectives.

The global impact of carbon registries in facilitating the transfer of carbon credits across borders, thus enhancing international cooperation in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, was also discussed. During the event, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment underscored the significance of carbon registries.

A roundtable on the carbon registry was also held, featuring representatives from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, industry players, auditors, and registries.

Detailed presentations on decarbonization strategies covering hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, and energy efficiency were examined, and several parallel sessions took place alongside the event, including topics related to voluntary carbon market technology, emission cap and trade, and the role of the carbon registry in prioritizing hard-to-reach sectors.
