UAE Red Crescent Unveils Green Zone in Jordanian Camp with the Presence of Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan

UAE Red Crescent Unveils Green Zone in Jordanian Camp with the Presence of Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan

The opening ceremony was graced by the presence of Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, the President and CEO of the UAE's Independent Accelerators for Climate Change, along with Hamoud Abdullah Al Junaibi, the Acting Secretary-General of the UAE Red Crescent, Mohammed Yousuf Al Fahim, Deputy Secretary-General for Support Services, and Khamees Jumaa Obaid Al Nuaimi, the head of the UAE relief team in Jordan, as well as various officials and volunteers from the organization.

The Green Zone in the camp features a number of environmentally-friendly housing units designed with sustainable materials. These units were entirely manufactured within the UAE using palm fronds and recyclable materials, thanks to the support of the Abu Dhabi First Bank, the strategic partner of the UAE Red Crescent. These units were then transported to Jordan through the logistical support of Aramex.

Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan personally handed over the keys to the new housing units to a group of Syrian youth preparing for marriage. She also planted an olive tree within the camp, symbolizing the beginning of a new green era that the camp and its facilities will witness in the coming period. During her visit, Sheikha Shamma and the accompanying Red Crescent delegation also toured other facilities within the camp, including the Cultural Complex, which houses the Grand Library and Mother Fatima Workshop, as well as the Sheikh Hamdan Hall. Children from the camp presented some folklore performances to welcome the delegation.

Expressing her deep gratitude, Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan commended the remarkable contributions of the UAE Red Crescent towards the clear impact of opening the Green Zone in the UAE Jordanian camp. She expressed her hope that this path and these steps will continue to pave the way for a more sustainable future, not only within the nation but also across the world.

Hamoud Al Junaibi, in turn, conveyed the appreciation of the UAE Red Crescent for Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bint Khalifa Al Nahyan's dedication to inaugurating the environmentally-friendly housing project in the camp. He highlighted the profound effect her visits had on the refugees' well-being, as she showed keen interest in understanding their humanitarian conditions.

He noted that this project aligns with the UAE Red Crescent's initiatives in the Year of Sustainability and coincides with the upcoming hosting of COP28, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The project further supports the UAE's efforts in empowering youth to play an active role and shoulder responsibilities towards the environment.

Al Junaibi emphasized that these housing units come with numerous benefits, including their resilience to various weather conditions and their reduction of heat emissions. He stated, "Our organization is currently focusing on sustainable projects, especially given the UAE's significant efforts to support sustainable development and climate action, aimed at improving the quality of life for all, both now and in the future."

The Secretary-General expressed his gratitude to the Red Crescent's partners in supporting this vital project, namely, Abu Dhabi First Bank and Aramex.

In this context, Abu Dhabi First Bank, one of the region's largest financial institutions, reaffirmed its strong commitment to social responsibility and its pursuit of sustainable humanitarian objectives and projects. The bank takes pride in its strategic partnership with the UAE Red Crescent and reiterated its unwavering support for the wise leadership's vision to promote values of goodness and giving across the region.
