THE FRENCH INSTITUTE ANNOUNCES THE WINNERS OF THE 16th EDITION OF ITS CINEMA FACTORY PROGRAM AND THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE LES CINÉMAS DU MONDE PAVILION 2024

The French Institute, along with its official partners France Médias Monde (RFI, France 24, and Monte Carlo Doualiya) and the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), is pleased to announce the ten selected film projects for the sixteenth edition of the French Institute's Cinema Factory and to present the highlights of the Les Cinémas du Monde Pavilion for the 2024 edition.

THE WINNING PROJECTS OF THE 2024 CINEMA FACTORY BY THE FRENCH INSTITUTE

The sixteenth session of the French Institute's Cinema Factory will take place at the Cannes Film Festival from May 14 to 25. The ten selected projects are:

  1. PHILIPPINES – Daughters of the Sea by Martika Escobar, produced by Monster Jimenez (Arkeofilms) / 2nd feature film.
  2. CÔTE D’IVOIRE – Étranger by Joël Akafou, produced by Laurent Bitty (Les Films du Continent) / 2nd feature film.
  3. ALGERIA – Refuge by Abdallah AlKhatib, produced by Salah Issaad (IFP Productions) / 2nd feature film.
  4. CUBA / BRAZIL – Moa by Marcel Beltrán, produced by Paula Gastaud (Mediocielo Films) / 2nd feature film.
  5. JAMAICA – Raised by Goats by Gibrey Allen, produced by Nadean Rawlins (RAW Management Ltd.) / 2nd feature film.
  6. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – Resistencia by Yanillys Perez, produced by Siddhartha Mata (YPR Films) / 2nd feature film.
  7. NORTH MACEDONIA – Spring Cleaning by Marija Apcevska, produced by Robert Naskov (Kino Oko) / 1st feature film.
  8. IRAN / UKRAINE – The Echo of the Leopard by Hanna Jalali, produced by Moeinoddin Jalali (2 People Production) / 1st feature film.
  9. PERU – The Last King by Victor Checa, produced by Jimena Hospina (Candu Films) / 2nd feature film.
  10. THAILAND – Tremble Like a Flower by Pathompon Tesprateep, produced by Cattleya Paosrijaroen (185 Films Co. Ltd.) / 1st feature film.

This diverse selection includes:

  • 9 fiction films and 1 documentary;
  • 4 female directors, 6 male directors, 6 female producers, and 4 male producers;
  • 7 second feature film projects and 3 first feature film projects;
  • 5 OIF member countries (Côte d’Ivoire, North Macedonia) and 3 observers (Dominican Republic, Ukraine, Thailand).

For the first time, projects from Jamaica and North Macedonia have been selected for the French Institute's Cinema Factory. Since 2009, this program has supported 154 projects from the Global South and emerging countries, involving 282 participants from 65 different nationalities.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2024 LES CINÉMAS DU MONDE PAVILION

The Les Cinémas du Monde Pavilion, home to the French Institute's Cinema Factory, will be the meeting point for French and international cinema professionals. The program will feature roundtable discussions, conferences, and masterclasses highlighting various topics, including:

  • New perspectives and actors from the African continent.
  • Lithuanian cinema in anticipation of the Lithuania Season in France 2024.
  • Brazilian initiatives for cinema ahead of the France-Brazil Season 2025.
  • Spotlight on five producers from the Dominican Republic.
  • Asian markets for audiovisual adaptation (Shoot the Book!).
  • Prevention of VHSS (gender-based violence and harassment).

Additionally, the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) will announce the results of the 1st commission of the Francophonie Image Fund.

The Les Cinémas du Monde Pavilion is a platform for work, exchange, and networking implemented by the French Institute in close collaboration with the Cannes Film Festival and in partnership with France Médias Monde (RFI, France 24, and Monte Carlo Doualiya) and the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF).
