South Korea’s Opposition Slams Ruling Party Over President’s Martial Law Controversy: Accusations of a ‘Second Coup’

The political landscape in South Korea is in turmoil as the opposition accuses the ruling party of attempting a "second coup" after President Yoon Suk Yeol’s controversial declaration of martial law. This drastic move, which lasted only six hours, sparked chaos when lawmakers resisted the decision, engaging in a physical confrontation with military personnel within the parliament. Ultimately, the lawmakers voted down the decree, forcing President Yoon into a swift and embarrassing reversal of his actions.

The president's decision to impose martial law led to immediate protests and has put South Korea at the center of a growing political crisis. Following the incident, investigations have been launched into the actions of Yoon and several senior government officials, with accusations of insurrection and an unlawful power grab.

Despite the gravity of the situation, a bid to impeach the president was thwarted this past Saturday after the ruling party members boycotted the proceedings. The party insists that President Yoon has delegated his powers to the prime minister and the leader of the ruling People Power Party, even though neither figure holds an elected position to wield such authority. This move has drawn fierce condemnation from the opposition, which decries it as an unconstitutional act.

A Clash of Political Power

Park Chan-dae, the Democratic Party's floor leader, has criticized the ruling party’s refusal to impeach the president and described their actions as a continuation of the "insurrection" started by Yoon. According to Park, the ruling party's failure to support the impeachment vote represents a clear violation of the constitution, elevating their position above the law.

South Korea's constitution clearly stipulates that the president is the head of government and the commander-in-chief of the military, unless incapacitated or removed through a legal process. In cases of presidential incapacity, power is temporarily transferred to the prime minister until a new election is held. The opposition argues that allowing Yoon to remain in power while delegating his authority to unelected officials is a blatant breach of constitutional law.

The situation has become even more critical as investigations continue to unfold. Authorities have detained former defense minister Lee Jong-seok, raided his offices, and imposed travel bans on a number of high-ranking officials. The general who was appointed to oversee martial law is also under investigation. Police have indicated that Yoon himself may be called in for questioning soon.

Constitutional Crisis or Political Game?

As the investigation intensifies, legal experts are speaking out about the constitutional implications of President Yoon’s actions. Kim Hae-won, a constitutional law professor, referred to the president’s actions as a “soft coup,” arguing that there is no legal justification for the ruling party’s claims that Yoon can remain president while delegating his powers to unelected officials. According to Kim, such a move represents a dangerous erosion of democratic principles and undermines the legal framework that governs the country.

The opposition remains steadfast in its resolve to impeach President Yoon. Despite the setback, Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung has vowed to continue pressing for Yoon’s removal, announcing plans to bring the issue back to parliament for another vote on Saturday. The public has shown significant discontent, with large protests expected outside the National Assembly building.

Yoon’s popularity has plummeted, with recent polls showing his approval rating at a historic low of 11 percent. This political crisis has left the country in a state of uncertainty, with many questioning the future of South Korea’s democracy and its leadership.
