The much-anticipated biographical film based on the life and career of American rock legend Bruce Springsteen, titled Deliver Me from Nowhere, has officially begun production. The movie is set to take audiences on a deep dive into the creation of Springsteen’s iconic 1982 album, Nebraska. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the filming started in November and is scheduled to continue through early 2025.
The biopic is being produced by 20th Century Studios and features a talented cast, with Jeremy Allen White of The Bear fame taking on the role of Bruce Springsteen. The film is directed by Scott Cooper, known for his work on Crazy Heart and Hostiles. It is adapted from Warren Zanes’ 2023 book, Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska. As the movie unfolds, it will explore both the creative struggles and triumphs that Springsteen faced during the making of Nebraska, an album that was groundbreaking in its raw, stripped-down approach to storytelling.
As part of the production, filming has taken place at various locations in New Jersey, where Springsteen himself grew up. The crew has worked meticulously to recreate a 1980s version of the iconic Asbury Park. Some of the notable locations included Frank’s Deli and Restaurant on Main Street, the famous Stone Pony, the Convention Hall, the Carousel House, and, of course, the beach that has been a staple of Springsteen's music and imagery. The team even ensured that vintage cars were placed on Main Street to accurately reflect the time period.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the film is the commitment to authenticity. For example, actor Jeremy Allen White, who plays Springsteen, went through extensive preparation to ensure he captured the essence of the music icon. He recorded multiple takes of Springsteen’s rendition of Little Richard’s "Lucille," ensuring the performance would be as true to the original as possible.
While the production has taken place in various locations, including Asbury Park, some of the filming had to be postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. In December, filming was set to occur in Freehold, Springsteen’s hometown, but a medical issue with a crew member forced a temporary halt. However, production is expected to resume in January, and the crew plans to shoot scenes in Freehold, with Main Street transformed to resemble the 1950s.
The biopic also features an impressive supporting cast, including Jeremy Strong from Succession who will portray Jon Landau, Springsteen’s longtime manager. Other notable cast members include Paul Walter Hauser from Cobra Kai as guitar technician Mike Batlan, Stephen Graham as Springsteen’s father, Douglas “Dutch” Springsteen, Johnny Cannizzaro as E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt, and Odessa Young as Faye, a character who plays a significant role in Springsteen’s formative years.
As filming continues in New Jersey, fans of both Bruce Springsteen and cinema alike are eagerly awaiting the release of Deliver Me from Nowhere, which is expected to hit theaters in 2025.
In 2024, Bruce Springsteen also celebrated a series of significant milestones in his musical career. His 2023-2024 tour was a massive success, with more than 4 million tickets sold worldwide. One of the highlights of the tour was a triumphant hometown performance at the Sea.Hear.Now Festival in Asbury Park, a location that holds significant sentimental value for both Springsteen and his fans. Additionally, Sony Music released a two-album collection titled Best of Bruce Springsteen, showcasing the best of his career, and celebrated the 40th anniversary of his album Born in the U.S.A. with a limited-edition vinyl release.
The film promises to bring Bruce Springsteen’s creative journey to life, shedding light on the intimate moments and challenges that shaped one of rock’s most influential figures.
