Nice Carnival 2025: A Commitment to Ocean Protection and Pollution Reduction

The Nice Carnival 2025, one of the world's largest carnivals, has dedicated this year's festivities to ocean preservation and combating pollution. This 140th edition, inaugurated on February 15, attracted approximately 200,000 visitors, all engaged in the importance of protecting marine ecosystems.

The central theme of the carnival, embodied by a King resembling Poseidon and a mermaid Queen, reflects the city's commitment to the oceans. This theme resonates with the upcoming third United Nations Ocean Summit, which Nice will host in June.

Organizers have implemented several ecological initiatives to reduce the event's environmental footprint. All recoverable materials are reused, with float platforms returning year after year to limit material production. Carnival participants adhere to an eco-manifesto charter, emphasizing the use of low-consumption lighting (such as LED), biodegradable or environmentally classified materials, recycling, and the recovery of materials and equipment for future use, thereby minimizing waste and pollution.

Particular attention is given to the polystyrene used in float construction. Machines collect the significant amounts of dust produced by the sculpting robots, transforming it into briquettes. After the Carnival, these are reclaimed to become new polystyrene blocks. Additionally, the city uses biodegradable confetti cannons and streamers for all Carnival events, contributing to a more environmentally friendly celebration.

The 2025 edition also stands out with the introduction of electric platforms for the Flower Parade floats. This year, seven out of fourteen floats are equipped with this technology, marking significant progress toward decarbonizing the event. This initiative demonstrates Nice's commitment to promoting more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.

By highlighting the beauty and fragility of the oceans, the Nice Carnival 2025 raises public awareness about the necessity of protecting these vital ecosystems. This year's festivities illustrate the city's and its residents' dedication to environmental preservation while celebrating the region's cultural and artistic richness.
