Qatar Halts LNG Production After Iranian Drone Attack, European Gas Prices Soar

Qatar’s state energy company QatarEnergy announced on Monday the immediate suspension of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) production following an Iranian drone attack on two of its key gas processing facilities in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed.

In an official statement, QatarEnergy said:
"Due to military attacks targeting our industrial facilities, the production of LNG and related products has been temporarily halted."

The Qatari Ministry of Defense confirmed that two Iranian drones struck a power plant and a gas processing complex, causing material damage and disrupting production.

Immediate Impact on Global Gas Markets

The announcement sent shockwaves through global energy markets. By 2:00 PM local time, the Dutch TTF futures contract, the European gas benchmark, surged over 48%, reaching €47.32 per megawatt-hour, briefly hitting €47.70 per megawatt-hour (+52.38%), the highest level since February 2025.

This sharp increase reflects Qatar’s strategic importance in global LNG supply. The country, which shares the world’s largest natural gas reservoir with Iran, exports primarily to Asia, but the disruption now threatens European supply, intensifying competition for alternative sources and driving up prices worldwide.

Qatar’s Strategic Role in Global LNG

Qatar is among the world’s top LNG producers, alongside the United States, Australia, and Russia. Its North Field, operated by QatarEnergy, holds about 10% of the world’s known natural gas reserves.

In recent years, Qatar has signed numerous long-term LNG supply contracts with major international energy companies, including Total (France), Shell (UK), Petronet (India), Sinopec (China), and Eni (Italy), securing its key role in the global energy market.

Economic and Geopolitical Implications

If production remains halted, the pressure on global gas prices could intensify, affecting Europe and Asian markets alike. Analysts highlight that this attack underscores the vulnerability of critical energy infrastructure in the Middle East amid escalating regional tensions.

QatarEnergy has pledged to closely monitor the situation and resume production as soon as possible, while implementing enhanced security measures to protect its facilities and workforce.
