Dubai: GEMS Education, a leading education provider based in the UAE, announced a groundbreaking zero-tolerance campaign against vaping on Monday, reinforcing its dedication to the health and well-being of its students. Recognizing vaping as an emerging global health crisis, GEMS is taking proactive measures to address its growing prevalence among young people, with a strong focus on educating students about the risks of vaping and nicotine addiction.
As part of this initiative, GEMS Education will install advanced vaping detection sensors in its schools, including the newly established GEMS School of Research and Innovation, which is set to open in August 2025. Lisa Crausby OBE, Group Chief Education Officer at GEMS Education, emphasized the seriousness of the issue, stating, “Vaping is one of the most pressing health threats facing young people today. At GEMS Education, we refuse to stand by and let this dangerous trend take hold in our schools. Students found with vapes in our schools will face serious consequences, followed by educational sessions with counselors to help them quit.”
Cutting-Edge Technology for Student Protection
The vaping detection sensors, which will be installed in high-risk areas across GEMS schools, will provide real-time alerts to administrators, allowing for swift and efficient action whenever vaping is detected. These state-of-the-art sensors are highly sensitive and tamper-resistant, ensuring accurate detection of vaping activities while filtering out other airborne particles. Additionally, the sensors are equipped with audio functions, alerting staff to potential concerns by picking up specific words, such as "help," to identify students in need of immediate support.
Comprehensive Anti-Vaping Education
In addition to the sensors, GEMS Education will implement a series of initiatives aimed at increasing awareness among students and parents. This includes incorporating anti-vaping education into the curriculum, ramping up student and parent awareness campaigns, and collaborating with health professionals to provide assistance to students struggling with nicotine addiction.
Crausby added, “This initiative is not just about banning vaping; it’s about equipping our students with the knowledge and resilience to make better choices for their health. We are committed to working closely with parents, educators, and the wider community to ensure our young people grow up in a safe and healthy environment.”
A Global Example for Schools
GEMS Education’s comprehensive anti-vaping measures set a powerful example for schools around the world. As the first major education group to implement such an extensive campaign, GEMS is leading the charge in making schools vape-free zones.
“Student health and safety are at the forefront of our mission, and this initiative demonstrates GEMS' unwavering commitment to protecting the future of our learners,” the group concluded.
With these proactive steps, GEMS Education is taking a bold stand in safeguarding the well-being of its students, setting a new standard for educational institutions worldwide.
