From June 30 to July 3, 2025, Cannes hosted the latest edition of the Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC), bringing together Web3 builders, crypto investors, and researchers from across Europe and beyond. Despite the intense European heatwave, the pace of innovation remained strong, with a clear tone of renewed focus, measured optimism, and growing institutional engagement.
The team at DWF Ventures attended to explore emerging trends, connect with promising early-stage teams, and observe where capital and attention are flowing across the ecosystem.
Community Consensus Returns to Ethereum
One of the most notable shifts at EthCC 2025 was the consolidation of interest around Ethereum. After a year of broader Layer 1 experimentation in 2024, the community appears to have refocused on Ethereum’s long-term infrastructure and ecosystem growth.
Unlike ETHDenver 2025, where conversations frequently centered on ETH price concerns, discussions in Cannes were more focused on development progress, scalability, and real-world adoption.
Arbitrum, Ethereum’s leading Layer 2 scaling solution, regained strong mindshare after a relatively quiet period. This renewed attention followed the announcement of Robinhood’s upcoming L2 chain built using the Arbitrum Orbit Stack. In contrast, discussions around alternative Layer 1s — which dominated the 2024 Brussels edition — were significantly less prominent this year.
Side events in Cannes were also more technically oriented and less extravagant compared to previous editions in Paris and Brussels, attracting highly engaged developers and committed builders.
Robinhood L2: TradFi Liquidity Moves On-Chain
A major highlight of the conference was the announcement of a new Layer 2 chain by Robinhood, developed using Arbitrum Orbit and introduced during the “To Catch a Token” event in Cannes.
The upcoming chain is expected to feature:
- Tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs for eligible European customers, covering more than 200 instruments, with dividend support and zero commissions.
- Crypto perpetual futures in the EU with up to 3× leverage, executed via Bitstamp.
- Crypto staking products available in both the U.S. and EU markets, starting with assets such as Ethereum and Solana.
Co-founder and CEO Vlad Tenev stated that Robinhood is laying the groundwork for crypto to become the “backbone” of the global financial system.
This announcement signals a broader structural shift: regulated TradFi institutions are no longer simply offering crypto exposure — they are actively building on-chain infrastructure.
Crypto-Native Funds Expand Into Equity
While traditional financial institutions move on-chain, crypto-native investors are increasingly exploring equity exposure, including public listings and pre-IPO deals. Many funds are also adopting treasury diversification strategies similar to those pioneered by MicroStrategy and Metaplanet.
A notable example is the $55 million financing round in Interactive Strength (NASDAQ: TRNR), co-led with ATW Partners. The transaction was structured through a combination of Private Investment in Public Equity (PIPE) and convertible notes — a model increasingly used to bridge crypto-native capital with traditional public markets.
Ethereum DeFi Reaccelerates
Ethereum-based decentralized finance (DeFi) showed clear signs of renewed momentum in Q2 2025, with rising volumes across decentralized exchanges (DEXs) and lending protocols.
EthCC Cannes hosted several dedicated DeFi-focused events, including “DeFi Summer Day,” organized by Aave and dYdX, drawing strong developer participation and community engagement.
Although Solana continues to push rapid innovation in DeFi, Ethereum remains the primary destination for both institutional and retail liquidity.
Stablecoins continue to serve as the foundational infrastructure layer for trading, lending, and capital movement across on-chain protocols.
Stablecoins Regain Strategic Importance
Stablecoins were one of the most recurring themes throughout EthCC Cannes 2025. The NYSE debut of Circle in June 2025 further elevated attention on the sector.
Circle also introduced several major initiatives:
- An application to launch a national digital currency bank in the United States
- The launch of the Circle Payments Network for cross-border USDC transactions
- The release of Circle Gateway to simplify cross-chain integration for developers
Synthetic dollars, including those developed by Falcon Finance, also generated considerable interest.
Meanwhile, blockchain ecosystems such as Base and Stellar are actively working to increase total value locked (TVL) in stablecoin-related applications.
At EthCC, stablecoins were discussed not merely as a medium of exchange, but as the foundation for on-chain lending, payments infrastructure, and real-world asset (RWA) settlement.
Final Thoughts
EthCC Cannes 2025 took place under the backdrop of a broader European heatwave, with several side events hosted outdoors along the beachfront. Compared to larger host cities such as Paris and Brussels, Cannes presented certain logistical constraints due to its size and limited local developer base. However, the more intimate setting encouraged deeper, high-quality discussions among participants.
Although the Ethereum Foundation has not officially confirmed the 2026 location, Cannes is reportedly under consideration to host the event again.
DWF Ventures continues to explore strategic opportunities across DeFi, stablecoins, and the convergence of centralized and decentralized finance, supporting builders shaping the next generation of blockchain infrastructure.
