UAE: Emirati Teen Defies Scoliosis, Becomes Beacon of Hope
Dubai witnessed the remarkable tale of Hejoon Al Zeyoudi, an 18-year-old Emirati with a wisdom far beyond her years. At a young age, Hejoon embarked on a mission to illuminate the path of hope by sharing her resolute journey of triumph against all odds.
Her encounter with scoliosis, a condition characterized by a pronounced curvature of the spine, surfaced at the tender age of 11. Hejoon confronted the challenges posed by this medical condition, enduring years of struggle. She reminisces, "My shoulders were misaligned, and my posture suffered greatly. This, in turn, had a profound impact on my self-esteem."
A testament to her indomitable spirit, Hejoon has undergone a remarkable transformation over the course of seven years. Her experiences have led her to pen an inspirational book titled "Raghma Shaook Al Hayat" (Despite the Thorns of Life), a poignant narrative of her journey.
In light of June being the designated month for raising awareness about scoliosis, Hejoon found the perfect avenue to share her story. Her intention is to extend a guiding hand to those facing similar circumstances. "Through my story, I aim to convey the message that the realm of possibilities is boundless. Challenges, though formidable, can be perceived as blessings that foster strength," she expressed with conviction.
Residing in Fujairah, Hejoon has commenced her aerospace engineering studies at Khalifa University of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi. This academic pursuit, which entails a daily commute, is made feasible today due to a transformative surgical intervention.
The initial signs of her condition became apparent around the age of 11, as uneven shoulders and postural difficulties caught her family attention. Prompted by these indicators, they sought medical counsel, leading to the diagnosis of a spinal curvature. Subsequently, she embarked on a regimen of physiotherapy, coupled with specific activities like swimming and climbing.
